About this item

  • Grow by sowing seeds in open ground or by early flowering from seedlings. Flowering begins in July and lasts until frost. For group planting in flower bed designs, and for flower arrangements.
  • Gently transplant seedlings into 10-cm (4-in) multi-purpose compost pots, firm and well watered. In mid-May, harden off the plants by putting them outside during the day and bringing them inside at night. Put them in their final position once all risk of frost has passed.
  • Fill the pot with moist seed compost, lightly compacting the surface. Gently push the dahlia seeds into the compost. Cover the pot with an inflatable clear polyethylene bag and secure with a rubber band. If sowing in seed trays, cover with propagator lids.
  • Annual plants (30-80 days). Sturdy stems, reaching heights of 30'-40' (80-100 cm). Large, round inflorescence baskets, measuring 2'-3' (4-6 cm) in diameter, with vibrant colors.
  • Seedlings will germinate within a few weeks. Once the "true" leaves have emerged, the seedlings are ready to be transplanted into individual pots. Grab the leaves of the plant and gently pick them out of the soil.
